The castle in Kwidzyn

is modeled on the Teutonic castles. The bird's-eye view, we can see a square figure, four-building,with the cloister and inner courtyard. The corners are accented by square towers, with the exception of the south-east side. There tall main tower is located. It is also the cathedral bell tower. From the north tower is connected with the castle by two arches called “small Gdanisko”. Inquisitive people certainly ask themselves the question - "What is it Gdanisko?". This is fortified tower located at some distance from the castle. This “Gdanisko” in Kwidzyn is the longest and most picturesque castle with a combination of defensive place. Such a solution is due to the Teutonic Knights, who were famous for their fondness for these towers, and often gives them their castles. Thanks to this design, septic tank immediately landed in a moat or a nearby river. It has greatly improved the sanitary conditions in the fortress. In addition, such buildings almost doesn’t exist, except the old convent demesne.

Kwidzyn Castle

The construction of Castle began around 1322. Finally it was done in the second half of the fourteenth century. And the castle was demolished in the late eighteenth century
The building in Kwidzyn is episcopal castle ruins now. It was built by the bishops at the beginning of fourteenth century on a square plan with a courtyard and square towers at the corners, and connected with the castle by a porch, resting on five monumental arcades. The King Władysław Jagiello make prize of the castle during the great expedition against the Teutonic Order in the famous Battle of Grunwald in 1410. During the second Peace of Torun in 1466, the castle has undergone in the possession of the Teutonic Knights. Its heyday ended with the Swedish Deluge in 1655, when the Swedes greatly damaged the building. The Prussian authorities have decided to demolish the castle partially in eighteenth century. It regarded mainly the south and west wings. Since then, the interior was rebuilt several times for the offices, and in the years 1855-1875 the castle was reconstructed. Now the Branch office of Castle Museum in Malbork has its headquarters in the north and the west wing housed.
