Roztocze

is a range of hills in east-central Poland and western Ukraine which connects the Lublin Upland with Podolia. Low and rolling, the range is approximately 180 km long and 14 km wide. It across Polish-Ukrainian border and lies from the northwest to the southeast, from Krasnik to Lviv. The highest peak reaches 414 miters. However, it is outside Polish borders. Its highest peaks within Poland are Kragly Goraj and Wielki Dział at 390 meters above sea level. Because of the unique natural beauty the Polish portion of the range makes up the Roztocze National Park, scenic parks and reserves (including Solokija).

Roztocze in terms of variety of sculpture and the geological structure can be divided into three sub-regions: West (Gorajski), Middle (Tomaszów) and South (Rawa).

Roztocze is a region unique in all respects. It is admireds both its landscapes, nature, and its sights. Through its history is full of rich cultural diversity. It is essential that the nature and wonderful sights exist here in harmony and complement to form an indivisible whole. Historic cities and towns, villages, and temples are superbly integral with the local landscape here.

Peculiar and worthy of appreciation is vegetation in Roztocze. Here, next to the beech-fir forests there are a multitude of colors of flowers, which is due to proximity to the Ukrainian steppes. We can find also the remnants of post-glacial peat plants, originating from the northern tundra.

Due to this unique landscape, visitors enjoy the many scenic hiking running and cycling here. Local rivers resemble the impetuous mountain streams. That’s why Roztocze is the ideal place for kayaking.

History:

Roztocze is formed by marl, and limestone rocks. Their arrears younger rocks are embedded in a shallow sea sands, calcareous sandstones and limestones. In the ice age to the region arrived the Scandinavian Ice Sheet. This request may be occurring here after The glacial tills and rocks can bear testimony about it. Roztocze can be denominated as the borderland. Once it was located on the outskirts of Czerwieńskie Grody, and later on the border between Russia and the Polish Piast, then within the Crown, on the border between Malopolska and Red Ruthenia. After the partition of Poland, the boundary cut them Russian and Austrian annexation, and nowadays there is the Polish-Ukrainian border.

The neighborhood altogether different nationalities led to the mixing of cultures in this area. The Jewish population also joined and merchants, craftsmen and industrialists. Among them were Armenians, Tartars, Hungarians, Germans, Greeks, Italians, Spaniards, Englishmen and Scots. The mutual influence of these population groups with different cultures and religions caused, that Roztocze  in terms of culture has become a fascinating land where influences of East and West were mixed. Evidence of it exists today in the form of art, architecture, landscape. It makes Roztocze as the most fascinating areas of culture in contemporary Poland and Ukraine.
