Miedzyzdroje

The town Miedzyzdroje is situated at the Baltic Sea on Wolin Island. The city is considered to be the summer capital of Western Pomerania. Since the nineteenth century Miedzyzdroje was called "the pearl of the Baltic Sea." The picturesque location between the wide beach with high cliff edge and cheeselog areas of Wolin National Park make up the attractiveness of this seaside resort. In addition, clear waters of the Pomeranian Bay, microclimate with medicinal properties, beautiful nature, charming landscapes capture several hundred thousand people each year.
Going to the seaside we think mainly about the beach and its warm sand. The beach in Miedzyzdroje is considered as the best one in Poland.
The cultural life and entertainment in seaside towns usually focuse on the promenade. So it is in Miedzyzdroje - you can drink beer, meet famous people or to watch the performances of various bands, actors and dancers.
The main natural attraction in this region is the Wolin National Park. There is an extensive network of hiking trails here. The huge attraction is the possibility of observation of many rare species of animals already.
Everyone who comes to Miedzyzdroje must know about a unique phenomenon occurring here, which is the Turquoise Lake. It was established as a result of flood waters, which swamped the chalky workings. The calcium carbonate makes a beautiful lake shimmers in the various colors of green, depending on the incident sunlight and lighting.

Miedzyzdroje

it is a town located on Wolin Island. It is a resort with a 150-year tradition. Before Miedzyzdroje became an important spa resort, it has been acting trade functions. In the mid-thirteenth century, there was an inn, which operated the main trade route along the sea coast. This functionality even for these days was very astonishing - supplied the passengers with food, served as a meeting place for inhabitants of the settlement, it was the courtroom, as well as a meeting place with officials duke. In those days people living in Miedzyzdroje took on agriculture, breeding pigs, cattle, fishing and hunting.

Thirty Years' War ravaged the whole Pomerania, suffered Miedzyzdroje too. The island was under Swedish rule.

In the eighteenth century the British discovered and spread the healing properties of sea bathing. Then the whole of Europe admired the spending their holidays at the seaside. And the first summer visitors began to arrive in Miedzyzdroje. The poor village soon changed into a rich and vibrant resort. In 1835 first bathing facilities were arranged on the beach. Of course separately for men and women. At the end of the nineteenth century there were organized mud baths, built hotels, guest houses and a casino. A pier of 300 meters long and harbour, supporting the tradition of fishermen (in the thirteenth century it was a fishing village), are still an undeniable attraction for tourists.

In the 60s of the XIX century, the Belgian businessman Lejeune built the most sumptuous holiday house (it is the House of Culture now) and in its surroundings arranged spa park with exotic trees.
