Mikołajki town
is a town located in the heart of Masuria - The Masurian Lake District in northern Poland. The distance is about 90 km from Olsztyn and about 25 km from Mragowo. More than half of the Masurian region is covered by forests and lakes. They create a characteristic feature of the landscape. Most of the lakes in this region is combined with another natural channel system. All creates a unique waterway in Europe, with a length of almost 140 km. Mikolajki is the center of this unique area. One of the largest Polish lakes – Sniardwy is within the municipality. Woods are the second element of a typical landscape of Mikolajki. The forests here are dense and extremely large. They take about 22% of the area of municipality. A substantial part of forests is located within the Masurian Landscape Park.
Thank’s to unique and world-famous natural beauty of landscape, Mikolajki enjoys a great success and recognition among many tourists who come here. There are many possibilities to spend time – for instance walking and sailing. Wild, unexplored places located along the shoreline of lakes, which can be reached only by sailboat, kayak or boat, are worth communing alone with the nature.
At the beginning it was a village here. Its inhabitants be concerned with fishing, weaving, logging and floating trees. In 1444 year the Master of the Teutonic Knights Konrad von Erlichshausen gave this land located next to the village church Mikolajki to Nobiles Wawrzyniec Prus. The name of the town comes from the church, therefore. Nicholas was the saint patron of the chapel.
According to legend, St. Nicholas was the patron of sailors and water access. His name was permanently connected first with Masurian village, and since 1726 with the city Mikolajki.
Three settlements made up a town: Rynek, Kniec and Kozlowo. From 1843 years has been bringing sailing in Masurian into action. It influenced on development of the city. In 1911 Mikolajki received a railway connection with Mragowo and Orzysz. Further expansion of infrastructure has enabled the development of Mikolajki as a popular tourist destination.
During World War II on the west side of Lake Mikolajki time it was a seat of Abwehr, with a code-named Walli II. Since 1940 members of Abwehr have sought information about the USSR.
Postwar rebuilding was going to develop tourist qualities of Mikolajki. And so it is today.
