History

Ostroda

was founded in the thirteenth century, near the castle of the Teutonic Knights in Pomezania, previously inhabited by the Old-Prussian tribe of Pomezans. The area was known as Prussia Upper or Polish Foothills from the sixteenth century. Probably the first settlers were German residents of the town of Osterode am Harz. After the Battle of Grunwald in 1410 Sir Nicholas of Durąg (Claus von Döring) took the castle and the city. He intended to vest it for the army of King Wladyslaw Jagiello. In 1440 Ostroda, like many other cities in the Masuria joined the Prussian Union against Teutonic Knights. In 1519 during the Polish-Teutonic War (called Prussian war) Ostroda was acquired by the troops of the Polish King Sigismund the Old. From 21 February to 1 April 1807 Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte lived in the castle.

Ostroda over the centuries of its existing is still a town of purely local importance. Just first railway line in 1872 raised its rank. World War II did not pass from Ostroda, moreover, as the majority of Polish territory. The town was largely destroyed.
