Szczecin City
is the capital of West Pomeranian Voivodeship. It is one of the largest Polish cities. Szczecin is situated right on the border with Germany. It has been recognized by the EU as one of the Polish metropolis. Apart from the geopolitical function of the city, it is known as one of the largest tourist centers in the country with a lot of monuments. Today in Szczecin about 200 objects are, under legal protection and the town itself is on the European Route of Brick Gothic. Szczecin represents a cultural center – few theaters, museums and cultural object. Thanks to Archbishop curia, theological faculties and The Shrine, Szczecin is also a religious center.
Szczecin was the seat of princes, so that was the Dukes' Castle was formed in the city. Urban remains of the fortifications, such as Tower Seven Coats or ornate gate and Port Royal Gate also provide about the past. In Szczecin there are many former residences, such as Palace Classical, Palace of the Globe, Jonic Palace, Palace of the Government of the United Pomeranian, Palace of Pomeranian Lands and tenements.
One of the outstanding buildings in Szczecin is the Basilica of St. Jacob. You should also pay attention to other churches include: Church of St. John the Evangelist, church of St. Peter. and St. Paul and church of John the Baptist.
The Shafts of Bolesław I the Brave, forming terraces with a length of 500 m on Oder are representative part of the city.
In Szczecin there is also a large seaport and shipyards. The city is surrounded by three forests. Probably because of it, Szczecin is considered as a floating garden with amazing greenery and water in its center.

Although it is hard to believe, but in the seventh-sixth century BC existed in this area the settlement from the period of the Lusatian culture. In ancient times there was city named Susudata in the vicinity of Szczecin. In the ninth century, Slav princes erected a castle surrounded by a moat. The commercial and fishing village developed next to the castle.
In 967 Mieszko I joined Pomerania together with the city of Szczecin to territory of Poland. Szczecin then consisted of three parts: a city, borough and port. Until about 1005 Szczecin was under the authority of Boleslaw the Brave.
In 1181 the town with the West Pomerania has become a vassal of the emperor and became a part of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1243, Duke Barnim I gave the city rights to Szczecin.
In 1630 the Swedes took the city. Hostilities during the Swedish invasion led to a considerable economic weakening of the city. In 1713 the town was incorporated into Prussia. The Russians made the siege of Szczecin during the Seven Years' War. Then 1806-1813 Szczecin came under French occupation.
The nineteenth century was a peaceful period in the history of the city. In 1843 the city received a rail connection with Berlin. It gave a beginning of railway in Pomerania. Soon after that the intense industrial development was noticed.
15 October 1939, was formed so-called. The Great City of Szczecin, existing until the end of the war. Created in the area some 100 camps of forced labor. At the end of World War II it was discovered how little is left of this city.
The Soviet Red Army captured the city on 26 April 1945. Finally the permanent transfer of the city to the Polish authorities took place on July 5.
Since 1999, the city is the headquarters of the Multinational Corps Northeast NATO forces.
