Kazimierz Dolny Market square
is very picturesque and famous. Probably because of it since the 19th century it has become a popular holiday destination, attracting artists and summer residents.
The market is the main point in Old Town of Kazimierz Dolny. It is open, and therefore overlook the parish church and a fortified castle built by Casimir the Great. Outside the old town, which give special charm to the seventeenth-century houses, everyone can see the castle ruins, churches, tower defense, barns, and even a synagogue. The Vistula bank offers here the wonderful views of the broads river, which flows slowly and majestically in this place.
To Kazimierz Dolny come many painters and landscapists. The big attraction is visit Kazimierz during National Festival of Folk Bands and Folk, Art and Film Festival "Film Summer" and the summer concerts of organ music and chamber music in the Parish Church. Worth of visiting are also the museums - the Museum of Natural History, Celejowska Tenement, Museum of gold Art and Kuncewiczowka and lots of art galleries.
The city Kazimierz Dolny, which we know today, there was a settlement known as the Windy Mountain in the early Middle Ages. At the end of XII (1181 r.) Prince Casimir the Just passed it along with nearby villages to sisters from Order from Zwierzyniec. It is believed that it was the sisters changed their name to the settlement "Kazimierz" in honor of his benefactor. The oldest document in which appeared the name comes from the year 1249.
XVI and XVII century is the time of big Kazimierz Dolny development. Its location on the Vistula River - the main trade route on this time - meant that residents of the city enrich on trade, especially in cereals. We can see it, looking at old and beautiful grain storehouses standing along the riverbank.
Times of the Swedish invasion bring an ending of the story about the splendor of the city that never recovered its former position. After the collapse of the January Uprising, it is a town and is relegated to the status of rural settlements.
After World War I Kazimierz has become a mecca of artists, mostly painters.
Then the World War II is an important moment in the history of the city. It ends time of dominance of the Christian and the Jewish community in Kazimierz, which has operated here since the Middle Ages. Today about the population of the Jewish faith remains only Synagogue from XVIII century, kosher butchers' shops and the building of the cemetery.
After the war the town reborn as a center of artistic and acting activities.
