Palace of Culture and Sience

Palace of Culture ( formerly the Palace of Culture and Science. Joseph Stalin ) - the tallest building in Poland, in the center of Warsaw on the Parade Square .

It was built as a gift of the Soviet people for the Polish nation, the building is the work of the Soviet architect Lev Rudneva.

Architecture is a blend of art deco, socialist realism and Polish historicism. Currently home have here many companies and public institutions, such as cinemas, theaters, library, universities (including the Collegium Civitas), scientific institutions and authorities of the Polish Academy of Sciences have home here. There are also organized various exhibitions and fairs. It houses the auditorium and conference hall for 3000 people (the so-called Congress Hall ), the Technical Museum , the Museum of Sciences of Evolution and Youth Palace , with swimming pool.

Culture and Science still arouses intense emotion among the inhabitants of Warsaw. It seems that there are as many supporters as opponents of it. The opponents believe that it is unnecessary reminder symbol of dominance, and strong influence of the former Soviet Union. But supporters argue that the building is the many useful features now, and argue that it has already become the city's characteristic element and a symbol and most recognizable building in Warsaw.

Palace of Culture

was built "as a gift from the Soviet people for the Polish nation". The originator of its construction was Joseph Stalin. Designer of the skyscraper was the Soviet architect Lev Rudnev. He wanted to make it in Polish style, but he needed inspiration. So he visited various cities, including Poland Cracow, Chelm, Zamość. After these expeditions he has created five projects, of which the Russians have chosen one.

Construction of the building lasted from 2 May 1952 to 22 July 1955 , and worked on it about 3,500 Soviet workers. During construction work accidents killed 16 Russians. Even before completion, two days after the death of Joseph Stalin, 7 March 1953 a joint resolution of the Council of State and Council of Ministers of Poland was given the name of the building - the Palace of Culture and Science, the name of Joseph Stalin.

The building originally had a bright facade, which has become gray. And it remained to this day.

On New Year's Eve 2000 on the tower of the palace was unveiled the second-largest clock in the - four of its discs have diameters of 6 feet. This is also the second highest clock tower in the world (after the clock tower at the NTT DoCoMo in Tokyo).

February 2, 2007 Palace of Culture was entered in the register of monuments.
