In the heart of Masurian Land, in the forest, east of the village Gierloz and 8 km east of Ketrzyn, there are ruins of the headquarters of Adolf Hitler. The town, hidden in the forest consisted of 200 buildings: shelters, barracks, 2 airports, power stations and the train station. There were even installed air conditioning units, water supply, heating, and two teleprinters. In addition, the headquarters was located on the north side of the railway line, which was equipped with a security in a reinforced concrete wall (their thickness of 8 m) and net of tunnels. Here were taken decisions about the prisoners and making use of them in the German armaments industry and in the construction of new camps. Hitler and his people arrived in Wolf's Lair on 24 June 1941 year. Hitler spent over 800 days here. In 1944, headquarters has a population of over two thousand people. 20 July 1944, Colonel Count Claus Schenk von Stauffenberg has made a failed attempt on Adolf Hitler.
According to all available sources, the evening could look like this:
Stauffenberg and his adjutant Werner von Haeften appear in the Wolf's Lair on July 20 before noon. His plane lands in Berlin near headquarters at 10.15. After two hours Stauffenberg says that he would like to freshen up before the council. John von Freyend made available to him in his room for this purpose. Haeften and Stauffenberg came together with the designated room to help with dressing and ... preparing explosives. The bomb was placed under the table in the place where the conference has taken place with the participation of Hitler. But Hitler was protected by the sturdy oak table. If this coup attempt was not failed, probably World War II would have completely different final.
In October 1944, Red Army troops reached the eastern border of East Prussia. In result the headquarters was moved to Zossen near Berlin in November 20, 1944. Two days later, it was issued the destruction order of Wolf's Lair. The execution took place at the night of 24 to 25 January 1945.
Wolf's Lair is open to visitors from 8.00 till 20.00, and 9.00-14.00 in winter.
